Handspun Vicuña Yarn

$599.99

The softest, most buttery yarn there is. Spun by hand on a Schacht Flatiron spinning wheel from our own Andean Vicuña Roving. Vicuña are the wild ancestors of domesticated alpaca, and their wool is the finest natural fiber in existence. The average fiber diameter (AFD) measures only 12 or 13 microns, and many individual fibers measure in the single digits - as little as 1/10th the thickness of a human hair. We handspun this wonderful fiber into a medium-weight, 2-ply yarn. The skein weighs 1.8 ounces (51 grams) and is 44 yards (40 meters) in length. This is, to our knowledge, the thickest weight of vicuña yarn available anywhere. Add this to a knit or woven project to experience the buttery-soft pleasure of the world’s finest handspun yarn.

Spun in Washington State from Argentinean vicuña fiber. 1.8 oz./44 yards. Handwash in cold water; lay flat to dry. Please note that vicuña is a short staple-length fiber, so the yarn should not be placed under high tension or used in a project that will see a lot of heavy wear. All Shepherd Textiles vicuña products are imported in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and traceable to healthy wild populations listed in Appendix II of the treaty.
