Himalayan Rhubarb Extract

from $18.99

Shepherd Textiles Himalayan Rhubarb Extract is made from the roots of rheum emodi, a species of rhubarb native the mountainous regions of northern India and Nepal. The roots produce a number of natural phenolic compounds, some of which like emodin are powerful natural pigments. Himalayan Rhubarb is a versatile dye that can give a range of colors depending on the PH and mordanting. In an acidic dyebath it will give wonderful, warm golden yellows on alum-mordanted fiber. However, if you add a bit of soda ash to adjust the PH up into the alkaline range, the color will shift to rich brick reds. Himalayan Rhubarb gives extremely lightfast and colorfast colors, and is an excellent choice for all natural fiber types. We import this extract direct from northern India; it is much stronger than other Himalayan Rhubarb extracts on the market and it has a wonderful, spicy smell. Use at 5%-10% weight-of-fabric (WOF) for strong colors on mordanted fiber.

Before using, please read our Guide to Dyeing with Himalayan Rhubarb Extract for color recipes, background, and safety information.

Product of India. Produced by a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified manufacturer.
