Aluminum Acetate
A superior mordant for cotton and linen. Aluminum acetate is the metal salt that forms when aluminum reacts with acetic acid, which is the same acid found in table vinegar. Aluminum acetate works much better than standard aluminum sulfate as a mordant for plant fibers, because when it is dissolved in water it forms very stable aluminum complexes that can penetrate plant fibers fully and evenly. The result on cotton or linen is a thorough mordanting job and bright and beautiful colors after dyeing. Aluminum acetate can applied to plant fibers using a tannin like sumac extract or oak gall extract, or it can be precipitated directly onto the fibers by mordanting them and then placing them in a warm chalk bath. Aluminum acetate is an excellent choice for cotton dyers and linen dyers who are looking for a mordant that gives brilliant and lightfast colors. For instructions, background, and safety precautions, please see our Guide to Mordanting with Aluminum Acetate.
Product of India. May cause skin, eye, or respiratory irritation. Do not ingest. Wear gloves, a mask, and eye protection while handling. In case of skin or eye contact, rinse with plenty of water. If swallowed, seek medical advice if you feel unwell. SDS available on request.
