Calcium Acetate

Calcium acetate is a highly soluble calcium salt that forms when calcium reacts with acetic acid, which is the acid found in vinegar (the reason that vinegar is often recommend for cleaning the limescale that builds up on kitchen appliances like coffee makers is that vinegar converts it to calcium acetate, which is so soluble that it easily rinses away). Calcium acetate was often the calcium salt recommended as an assistant in old dyeing recipes. Its main advantages over calcium carbonate are that it dissolves completely without leaving any precipitate, and it does not raise the pH of the dye bath. Since it dissolves completely it helps produces level, even colors. Since it does not raise the pH of the dye bath it works well with dyes and color shades that prefer a more acidic environment (calcium carbonate, which is alkaline, tends to shift natural dyes toward cooler hues). Calcium acetate was especially recommended as an assistant when dyeing with madder, where it helps to produce bright, warm crimsons. Sold in jars of 100 grams.
