Cochineal Extract C.A. Plus™

from $29.95

Shepherd Textiles Cochineal C.A. Plus™ is a new form of Peruvian cochineal extract that is rich in highly soluble carminic acid. In contrast to carmine (the traditional form of cochineal extract that has been in use since the 17th century) Cochineal C.A. Plus™ is easier to dissolve, easier to apply to mordanted fiber, and yields results more similar to raw cochineal. It will produce pinks, crimsons, or fuchsias when dyed on an aluminum mordant, or lilacs and purples on iron. It is suitable for use and gives good results on all textile fibers including wool, silk, and cotton.

Unless you prefer to use traditional carmine [see our Cochineal Extract Carmine] for historic reasons or for specific purposes like steam-printing, we recommend using the new Cochineal C.A. Plus™ for dyeing textile fibers. This is a very strong extract and it will give good red or fuchsia shades at 2% weight-of-fabric, or deep pinks at 0.5%. Check out our Guide to Dyeing With Cochineal Extract C.A. Plus for color recipes, tips, and for a more detailed explanation of the differences between the various types of cochineal extracts.

Product of Peru. Produced by a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified manufacturer.
