Fructose Sugar

from $9.95

Fructose sugar is a reducing sugar that is used for building indigo vats. It is a natural and non-toxic alternative to industrial reducing agents like thiourea and hydrosulfite. The reason it works so well is that fructose sugars in solution donate their electrons to oxygen molecules, which causes the oxygen to be “reduced” to a lower oxidative state. In an indigo vat this creates the right conditions for blue indigo to convert into the soluble leuco-indigo that is useful as a dye. Fructose sugar performs best when the indigo vat is heated to between 130°F and 140°F — lower temperatures can result in an extremely slow reduction, while higher temperatures can scald the sugars and create sediment in the vat.

Sold in jars of 150 grams, perfect for building an organic indigo vat using the 1-2-3 method (50 grams of indigo, 100 grams of calcium hydroxide, 150 grams of fructose sugar). Also available in a larger 1 kilogram size.
