Assamese Muga Silk (16 μm)

from $34.99

Muga silk is the rarest and most luxurious of silks, once reserved entirely for the royalty of the kingdoms surrounding the Bay of Bengal. The muga silkworm Antherea assamensis is not cultivated, and its cocoons can only be gathered in the wild. It is considered an "ahimsa" silk or "peace" silk because the cocoons are only picked after the moth has grown up and flown away, meaning no creatures are harmed to make it. Shepherd Textiles Assam Muga Silk Roving is sourced directly from a village of weavers in Odisha that has specialized in wild silks for generations. This roving is soft, fluffy, and intensely lustrous, with a 6” to 8” staple length. It can be spun into beautiful golden yarns or blended into your favorite fiber mix. A small amount of golden muga silk can be dissolved into homemade soap recipes to give it a luxurious silky feel fit for a king or a queen.
