Goldenrod Extract
Shepherd Textiles Goldenrod Extract Natural Dye is produced from solidago canadensis and solidago virgaurea, the Canadian and European species of goldenrod. Goldenrods are common all across the temperate northern hemisphere, and when they bloom in the autumn each plant opens thousands of brilliant little florets that can color a whole landscape yellow. The flowers contain a variety of yellow pigments that can be applied to fiber, including quercetin, lutin, and kaempferol. The yellow produced by Goldenrod Extract is on the greener end of the yellow spectrum, and it is mellower than many other natural yellows. This natural tendency toward green means that Goldenrod Extract also combines particularly well with iron mordants to produce sagebrush and olive shades.
Goldenrod Extract is not as strong as some of the other natural yellow extracts - it requires about 25% weight-of-fabric (WOF) for a medium yellow or deep olive, depending on the mordant. Check out our Guide to Dyeing with Goldenrod Extract for color recipes and background information.
