Handspun Guanaco Yarn

$149.99

This medium-weight yarn was handspun on a Schacht Flatiron wheel from our own Wild Guanaco Wool. Guanaco are the wild ancestors of domesticated llama, in much the same way that vicuña are the ancestors of alpaca. They have some of the finest wool in the natural world, measuring on average about 15μm thick. The yarn feels absolutely buttery, and is softer against the skin than any other fiber except vicuña itself. It is undyed and comes in its natural creamy latte shade.

Please note that this is what spinners refer to as “art yarn” - that is, it is uneven and slubby. This is because a slippery 1” staple-length fiber is difficult to spin consistently thin. It should not be used for warp or other high-tension situations. However, as weft or knitted into a larger project, it will have a fantastic buttery-soft feel that only a fiber as fine as guanaco can provide.

Skein weighs 2 ounces and measures 43 yards. 100% guanaco.

Product of Argentina; spun in our studio in Washington state. Our guanaco products are imported in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and come from healthy wild populations listed in Appendix II of the treaty. If you need more, or the yarn is “sold out,” please email us and we can spin some more for you!
